A Celebration of Reading Returns Home: International Literacy Day 2026 at Sengezane Primary School

Every September, the world unites to celebrate International Literacy Day, a day that reminds us that reading is more than a skill. It is a foundation of opportunity, empowerment, and lifelong learning. For the Edward Ndlovu Memorial Trust, in partnership with Book Aid International, this global celebration has grown into a cherished tradition that brings books, communities, and hope together in some of Zimbabwe’s most underserved rural areas.

Over the years, our International Literacy Day commemorations have intentionally rotated among our partner schools in rural communities. This approach ensures that every celebration leaves behind more than memories it strengthens local reading cultures, inspires learners, and shines a spotlight on communities that are often overlooked.

These celebrations bring together an incredible mix of stakeholders united by one common purpose: nurturing a generation of readers. Learners, teachers, school development committees, parents, village heads, Ministry of Education officials, community leaders, development partners, and literacy advocates all gather to champion the transformative power of books.

Building a Culture of Reading

One of the defining moments in our literacy journey was last year’s celebration at Bethel Primary School. What began as a day of reading festivities has since blossomed into something extraordinary. The school now boasts a state-of-the-art library that stands as a beacon of what is possible when communities invest in literacy. More than just a room filled with books, the library has become a vibrant learning hub where curiosity is nurtured, imaginations flourish, and dreams begin to take shape.

Bethel has become a benchmark for what the Edward Ndlovu Memorial Trust envisions across the districts we serve. This is a future where every child, regardless of where they live, has access to quality books and an inspiring space to read, learn, and grow.

The Movemement

International Literacy Day has become synonymous with vibrant community participation. One of the most anticipated highlights is the colorful literacy march, where learners, teachers, parents, and community members walk proudly from a designated starting point to the celebration venue.

Armed with creative placards carrying powerful messages such as “Readers Become Leaders,” “Books Open Doors,” “Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader,” and “Reading Changes Lives,” participants transform the roads into a moving campaign for literacy. Songs, poetry, cheers, and excitement fill the air, reminding everyone that reading is a school activity and also a it is a community responsibility.

It is a joyful spectacle that captures hearts while sending a powerful message: every child deserves the opportunity to read.

Sengezane Primary School Takes Centre Stage

This year’s celebration promises to be one of the most memorable yet.

On 16 September 2026, the International Literacy Day celebrations will be hosted at Sengezane Primary School, a well-deserved recognition of the school’s outstanding achievement in the Book Box Reading Competition. Their commitment to promoting reading has demonstrated what determination, teamwork, and access to books can accomplish.

Hosting the event at Sengezane is both a celebration and an inspiration, which is a testament that excellence can thrive in rural schools when learners are given the right resources and encouragement.

A Homecoming with Deep Meaning

This year’s event carries an even deeper significance.

Sengezane is not just another host school it is the home area of the late Edward Ndlovu, whose vision continues to inspire the work of the Edward Ndlovu Memorial Trust. Bringing International Literacy Day to his home community makes this celebration especially meaningful.

It is a powerful homecoming that honours his enduring legacy and demonstrates how one person’s vision can continue transforming lives long after they are gone. As children gather to read, families celebrate learning, and communities unite around books, the occasion becomes a living tribute to Edward Ndlovu’s unwavering belief that education is one of the greatest tools for changing lives.

Celebrating Impact and Inspiring the Future

International Literacy Day at Sengezane Primary School will be about much more than speeches and ceremonies. It will celebrate achievement, recognize outstanding readers, strengthen community partnerships, and reaffirm our collective commitment to ensuring that every child has access to quality reading materials.

Most importantly, it will showcase the remarkable impact of the Edward Ndlovu Memorial Trust’s work across the district. From establishing libraries and supporting reading programmes to empowering schools through the Book Box initiative, the Trust continues to demonstrate that investing in literacy is investing in the future of entire communities.

As we gather on 16 September, we will celebrate books and even new possibilities. Every page turned represents a new opportunity. Every child who discovers the joy of reading becomes another story of hope in the making.

Together with Book Aid International, our partners, educators, parents, traditional leaders, and the wider community, we invite everyone to join us in celebrating a movement that continues to prove one simple truth:

When we give a child a book, we do far more than teach them to read, we empower them to dream, to imagine, to achieve, and to transform their world.

We look forward to welcoming you to Sengezane Primary School as we celebrate International Literacy Day 2026 a day where communities unite, stories come alive, and the love of reading finds a home in every heart.
